Captain Hannah Winterbourne is a 30 year old Officer of the British Army serving with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

In 2013 Hannah came out as a transgender woman and became the highest ranking transgender soldier within the British Army. As part of the Army LGBT Forum, she became the Army's Transgender Representative where she has responsibility to advise Senior Army commanders on transgender policy, educate the wider Defence and most importantly, mentoring and supporting the Army's many transgender soldiers.

Citing the effect openly trans people had on her own transition, Hannah was very keen to become a visible role model for others to see, in particular a positive role model showing that transgender women didn't have to be pigeon holed into stereotypically feminine jobs.

Originally, Hannah told her personal story of transition to UK newspapers but soon found that it had been published in newspapers and online outlets across the world. She has also conducted several TV interviews as a transgender advocate including appearances on Lorraine, The One Show and The Victoria Derbyshire Show.

Having had a taste of how lives can be influenced through role model work she opened up her services to several charities, campaigns and events to try and broaden her audience. She has spoken at Trans Pride Brighton, Liverpool Pride and Student Pride and has supported LGBT campaigns such as TransGirlsCan and Stonewall's NoBystanders.

However, Hannah's real passion sits with role modelling for LGBT Youth. In 2015 she became Patron of the charity Mermaids who support gender non-conforming children and their families, attending all of their events and showing young people that their identities are valid and they don't have to accept a life of misery and pain.

As an active and competitive person, Hannah is also an Ambassador for LGBT Sport Cymru (Wales), promoting transgender inclusion in sports across Wales.

In her remaining time, she enjoys time with her friends and family, musicals and watching Wales play rugby!
